An Employment Tribunal has dismissed John McCririck’s direct age discrimination case. The presenter brought a claim over Channel 4’s decision to remove him from a presenter of Channel 4 Racing, which he alleged was direct discrimination on the grounds of his age.
Whilst the Tribunal found that Channel 4’s objectives for removing McCririck were similar to that in O’Reilly v BBC (where direct discrimination on the grounds of age was found to occur), it held that the station did not reach its decision based on the presenter’s age. Instead the decision was made because of his image and presenting style. Presumably neither were felt to be outdated.
